10 killed, 11 wounded in Lwandle shisanyama shooting - IOL

TEN people have been killed and 11 others wounded after gunmen stormed a Lwandle shisanyama and opened fire on patrons in the early hours of Sunday, 27 September 2026.

​Five people died at the scene and another five succumbed to their injuries after being taken to medical facilities.

​The 11 surviving victims were receiving medical treatment following the shooting, which happened at about 1.46am.

​Western Cape police said gunmen entered the entertainment venue, which also sells braaied meat, and fired at patrons.

​No arrests had been made by Sunday morning as detectives searched for those responsible.

​Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Sizakhele Dyantyi has established a multidisciplinary team, led by Serious and Violent Crime detectives, to investigate the mass shooting.​

Police have also increased deployments in Lwandle while the search for the gunmen continues.

​Lwandle police have opened murder and attempted murder cases.

​SAPS has not disclosed a possible motive for the attack or said how many gunmen were involved.

​The identities of those killed have not yet been released. Police said their names will be made public once their next of kin have been informed.

Meanwhile,, Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has condemned the horrific loss of life in two separate shooting incidents in Khayelitsha and Lwandle over the weekend, in which a total of 14 people were killed and 11 others injured.

“These are horrific acts of violence that have left communities traumatised. There can be no justification for the deliberate taking of so many lives, and my thoughts are with the families and loved ones of all those who have lost their lives,” said Minister Marais.

In Khayelitsha, four men were killed in a shooting in Mthuma Street, Site C, on Saturday evening. Three victims were declared deceased at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a medical facility.

Minister Marais said: “Every person who had a hand in these attacks must be held accountable and prosecuted where the evidence supports it. 

“Those who supply firearms to criminals, those who organise violent attacks and those who carry them out must understand that their actions will not be tolerated. 

“Following the chain of responsibility is essential if we are to disrupt the networks that continue to put firearms into the hands of criminals.”

Marais highlighted the urgent need for continued cooperation between SAPS and other law-enforcement and justice-sector stakeholders in addressing the circulation of illegal firearms and organised crime.

She added: “I am particularly concerned about the devastating impact of these shootings on ordinary residents and families. We cannot allow communities to become accustomed to the sound of gunfire or accept mass shootings as an inevitable part of life.

“I therefore urge the investigating teams to conduct thorough investigations to ensure that the full chain behind these attacks is uncovered.”
