135 relief camps ready as Sabari rises in Polavaram district

At least 135 relief camps have been arranged along the banks of the Sabari in Chintoor agency in Polavaram district following a sharp rise in inflows into the river on Saturday.

The Sabari and Sileru rivers have been receiving heavy inflows following rains in their catchment areas in Chhattisgarh and Odisha over the past four days. The Sabari enters Andhra Pradesh at Chintoor and joins the Godavari at Kunavaram after flowing for over 30 km.

Polavaram District Collector K. Dinesh Kumar inspected the flood-affected villages in V.R. Puram and Kunavaram mandals on Saturday. Officials said 161 villages along the Sabari were likely to be affected if the inflows into the Sabari and Godavari increased further.

At least 10 pregnant women had been shifted to nearby hospitals, while another 101 pregnant women in the Chintoor agency had been advised to be prepared for shifting to hospitals.

The water level at the Chintoor bridge stood at 43.5 feet on Saturday and was expected to rise further over the next 24 hours.

Joint Collector S. Prasanth Kumar, Chintoor Integrated Tribal Development Agency Project Officer Subham Nokwal and other officials were monitoring the flood situation and distribution of essential commodities.

At Dowleswaram in East Godavari district, the Godavari water level remained below the first flood warning level.
