An 18-year-old woman was kicked in the head, stomped on and stabbed multiple times in an incident at Deer Park on Wednesday night.

Victoria Police said two groups met at a reserve following what is believed to be an online dispute.

The teenager suffered six stab wounds and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a "distressing" incident in which a teenager was kicked in the head and stabbed multiple times in Melbourne's west last night.

Victoria Police said officers were called to Robert Bruce Reserve at Deer Park after reports of a brawl involving a group of young people at about 7:15pm.

Officers found an 18-year-old woman with serious stab wounds.

Police said footage of the incident shows the woman being kicked in the head while she was on all fours and then stabbed multiple times.

She was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police said a 20-year-old woman was also assaulted but did not require treatment.

Detective Acting Sergeant Ali Samie said it is believed the group met at the reserve following an online dispute and the two women were set upon.

"One of the victims was brutally assaulted. She was kicked to the head, stomped on and stabbed repeatedly by one or more of the offenders," he said.

"It's outrageous that youths are out there wielding these knives and stabbing people.

He said the 18-year-old woman received six stab wounds to her upper body.

Three knives have been seized and are being forensically tested.

The incident comes a day after the Victorian government announced it would give police sweeping powers to search people for knives if re-elected.

The so-called Jack's Law legislation already has the support of the Liberal opposition, which previously announced it would introduce it if elected at the state election in November.

Jack's Law is named after teenager Jack Beasley who was fatally stabbed while out with friends on the Gold Coast in 2019.

Victoria Police said its investigation into the Deer Park stabbing was ongoing and asked for anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
