20 Steel Plates on Kyai Maja JPO Stairs Reinstalled After Being Stolen

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Twenty stair treads that had gone missing on the pedestrian bridge (JPO) Kyai Maja in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, have now been repaired.

Kompas.com observed at the site on Thursday (9/24/2026) that the newly installed steel plates differ in color from the old ones. The new plates appear thicker and are painted in a dark green color.

The access ramp to the bridge, previously closed for repair work, has been reopened.

Several old bolts were scattered on the stairs, and the wider treads appeared imperfectly installed on the staircase framework.

This caused a distinct noise when the steps were walked on.

The bridge structure remains safe to use, although many parts show signs of wear.

No pedestrians were seen using the JPO at the time; only two construction workers were resting on the stairs.

One of them, Irwan (40), recalled how concerning the JPO’s condition was before the repairs on Tuesday night (9/22/2026).

"Wow, before it was scary with all those holes, but now it’s good again, praise be," Irwan said when interviewed at the site on Thursday.

Irwan did not know where the stolen steel plates had gone or how long they had been missing.

A nearby vendor, Ridwan (not his real name) (39), said the theft happened about two months ago.

"Yes, it’s been two months, stolen by someone," Ridwan said when met at the location on Tuesday (9/22/2026).

The JPO was still frequently used by local residents, although usage had declined due to a dusty construction project in the area.

Officials from the South Jakarta Public Works Department at the site said they are currently investigating the perpetrators of the steel plate theft.
