2027: LP urges governors to emulate Otti’s leadership - Punch Newspapers

The Labour Party has urged governors and other political leaders across the country to emulate the leadership style of the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, made the call in its Independence Day message on Wednesday, while urging Nigerians not to lose hope despite the economic and security challenges confronting the country. Asogwa said Otti, who was elected on the LP platform in 2023, had demonstrated what it described as credible leadership and provided Nigerians yearning for change with a reason to trust the party’s candidates in the 2027 elections. He said, “Given the demonstrated credible leadership taking place in Abia State, where Governor Alex Otti, a product of the Labour Party, holds sway, the Party is bold to say that it is a party that has been tested and has proven its fidelity to its promises to the Nigerian people. “Governor Otti, our pride and a role model in true leadership, has given every Nigerian yearning for change a reason to trust in the candidates of the Labour Party in the coming polls.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google “The party therefore calls on all those in positions of authority to follow in the footsteps of the Labour Party and govern with empathy, justice and transparency, bearing in mind that no nation has ever achieved true development without deliberately prioritising the welfare and wellbeing of its citizens.” The party’s endorsement of Otti’s record comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with presidential, governorship and legislative contests expected to dominate political activities in the months ahead. The party also called on those holding public offices to govern with empathy, justice and transparency, stressing that citizens’ welfare should remain at the centre of governance. Asogwa attributed some of the country’s current economic and security difficulties to what he called years of ineffective leadership and governance. He, however, urged Nigerians not to surrender hope, saying citizens had a responsibility to hold their leaders accountable. “There will surely be joy in the morning. It would be a double tragedy for a people who have endured years of misrule to now surrender hope for their country. “We must remember that meaningful change will only come when we, as citizens, rise to hold our leaders accountable, an obligation that cannot be fulfilled through resignation or despair. “As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, the Labour Party reaffirms its faith in the Nigerian people and in the capacity of our nation to overcome its present challenges and fulfil its enormous potential,” he added.
