529 child labourers rescued in Bengaluru; 105 cases registered

As many as 529 child labourers were rescued and 105 cases registered against employers during a special operation conducted by the Bengaluru City Police on Saturday.

The operation was carried out on September 12 on the directions of senior police officers. Special teams comprising police personnel and Labour Department officials conducted surprise inspections at 6,076 commercial establishments, industrial areas and other locations across the city.

The rescued children were found working at different establishments, following which they were taken into the care of the authorities concerned for further action.

The police said 105 cases have so far been registered against shop owners and other employers who allegedly engaged children as labourers. The cases have been booked under provisions of the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act.

Among the city divisions, the West Division recorded the highest number of rescued children at 103, followed by north with 66, central with 63, south with 52 and north-east with 47.

The CCB rescued 45 children and registered the highest number of cases at 26, while the East Division rescued 74 children and registered 18 cases. The North-East Division registered 17 cases, while the west registered 15.

The police said the action against establishments employing children would continue.
