$93 mn genetic testing, doctors' identities: Indian defrauds US healthcare system
A laboratory owner in Texas is accused of causing approximately USD 93 million in fraudulent claims for genetic testing. The US government-funded Medicare healthcare programme paid at least USD 63 million on these submissions, including approximately USD 13 million during a 10-day period in 2023.
An estimated USD 6 million was also seized from bank accounts controlled by Mohammed during the investigation.
Khadeer Khan Mohammed, 46, reportedly owned American Premier Labs LLC in Richardson, Texas. He allegedly carried out the scheme between August 2023 and October 2024 in the Northern District of Texas and elsewhere.
Mohammed has now been listed as a fugitive by the federal authorities in the US, who believe he is in Hyderabad, the capital of India's southern state Telangana.
According to the allegations, Mohammed caused claims to be submitted to Medicare for laboratory genetic tests that were not eligible for reimbursement, had not been ordered by authorised medical providers, or were not provided as represented.
Authorities alleged that he also used physicians' personal identifying information without their knowledge or consent to submit claims for genetic tests for Medicare beneficiaries with whom the doctors had no treatment relationship.
The tests were allegedly neither ordered by the physicians nor used in the medical care of the beneficiaries.
US federal authorities have not announced a conviction or sentencing because Mohammed's case remains pending, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.- EndsPublished By: sharangee Published On: Sep 12, 2026 11:37 IST
