A win is a win: Athlete defends Hyrox victory after mid-race incontinence in Beijing

“Go hard or go home. A win is a win.”

That was the message Australian Hyrox athlete Joanna Wietrzyk delivered after she suffered a fecal incontinence during a race in Beijing, but continued competing and went on to win.

Wietrzyk has now defended her decision to push through the incident, which sparked a fierce debate across the Hyrox community over whether she should have been allowed to continue competing.

In a now-deleted Instagram story, Wietrzyk thanked people for their support and said she would be back soon, while standing by her approach to the race.

Videos from the event went viral after Wietrzyk appeared to lose control of her bowels during the indoor fitness competition, which combines running with strength-based exercises. Despite the incident, she continued through demanding sections of the race, including burpee broad jumps, and crossed the finish line.HYROX FACES BACKLASH

The incident quickly became a major talking point online, with some competitors questioning how Wietrzyk was allowed to remain in the race and criticising organisers over their handling of the situation.

HYROX organisers acknowledged that the incident exposed ambiguity in the way their medical and biocontaminant protocols were applied.

In a statement, the organisers said an “unforeseen situation” had created confusion between procedures designed for elite competition and those used for mass-participation events.

They said the concerns raised by competitors were legitimate and promised to review what happened.‘NO PLACE FOR THREATS’

While acknowledging the controversy, HYROX strongly defended Wietrzyk against the backlash directed at her. “There is no place in our community for threats of violence or encouragement to harm an athlete,” the organisers said.

They added that anyone found making threats or encouraging harm against an athlete through comments, direct messages or social media would be permanently banned from all HYROX events.

HYROX also said it was reviewing the accounts involved and would take action against those responsible.‘A WIN IS A WIN’

The controversy has put Wietrzyk's extraordinary finish at the centre of a wider debate about the limits athletes should push themselves to during competition.
