After Aleema, 2 more sisters of jailed Imran Khan detained for 30 days in Lahore
Two more sisters of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan were detained on Monday, a day after their sister Aleema Khan was taken into custody under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law, as tensions rise ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest on September 27.
Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were detained under Section 3 of the MPO and have been shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail for 30 days, according to officials and Pakistani media reports.
Their detention followed the arrest of Aleema Khan, who was also placed under a 30-day preventive detention order by the Lahore deputy commissioner.
PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram said the two women were taken into custody along with other family members. He said they were placed in an armoured vehicle and taken to an undisclosed location.
However, lawyer Rana Mudassar later confirmed that Uzma and Noreen had been transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Reports also said Aleema's two sons, who were briefly detained, were later released.IMRAN KHANβS SON CONDEMNS DETENTIONS
Imran Khan's son Kasim Khan condemned the detentions and claimed that authorities entered the homes of his relatives and forced them into vehicles without providing an explanation.
βThis is criminal behaviour. Inexcusable,β he wrote on X.
PTI has also criticised the detentions and accused the authorities of targeting members of Khan's family. These claims have been disputed by authorities, who have cited public-order concerns as the basis for the MPO detention orders.
The detentions come days before the PTI's planned nationwide protest and march towards Islamabad on September 27. The party has said the protest is aimed at demanding Khan's release and raising concerns over the treatment of its founder.GOVERNMENT WARNS PTI OVER SEPTEMBER 27 MARCH
Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned PTI against proceeding with the planned march.
Naqvi said the party should reconsider its plans and referred to a court order stating that political parties do not have the right to occupy public roads. He urged PTI to adopt a different approach.
PTI leaders, meanwhile, have maintained that the planned protest will be political and peaceful.
Aleema Khan's lawyer has challenged her detention in the Lahore High Court. Her 30-day detention order was issued after the Lahore administration cited concerns over public safety and order.CONCERNS OVER IMRAN KHANβS HEALTH
The latest detentions have also drawn attention to concerns surrounding Imran Khan's health. The 73-year-old former prime minister has remained in jail since August 2023 following a series of convictions. Several of those convictions have subsequently been suspended or overturned on appeal.
His family and PTI have repeatedly raised concerns over the condition of his right eye and his access to medical treatment. His sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, have also publicly spoken about their concerns regarding his health and treatment in jail.
Khan's lawyers had previously sought medical treatment for him outside prison. The Supreme Court had ordered that he be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical care, according to his legal team.
However, officials instead took him to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a check-up before returning him to jail.
The latest arrests of Khan's three sisters come as the political standoff between PTI and the government intensifies ahead of the September 27 protest.
