Vanuatu's government says it has revoked the citizenship and passport it issued to alleged rapist, social media influencer and self-described misogynist Andrew Tate.

Tate and his brother Tristan are currently in a Miami jail following their arrests in July after Britain requested their extradition to face charges of rape, assault and facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.

A Vanuatu government spokesman has confirmed Tate's citizenship, which he purchased in 2022 under the country's controversial citizenship by investment scheme, has now been revoked.

Glen Craig led a commission of inquiry into Vanuatu's citizenship scheme three years ago.

He says Tate should never have been granted citizenship in the first place.

"The government was in a position where they could not revoke the citizenship until they had been found guilty or charged or there had to be some really good reason to do so," he said. "I think it's quite clear you should be of good character, it's a privilege to have citizenship of another country."
