Andhra Pradesh’s ₹253 crore forensic lab to open by January 2027, says DGP

Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta on Saturday (September 12, 2026) announced that the Andhra Pradesh State Forensic Laboratory (APSFL) building, currently under construction at a cost of ₹253 crore in Thullur near Amaravati, would be inaugurated by January of next year, with 80% of the construction work already completed.
Addressing a press conference in Rajamahendravaram, Mr. Harish Gupta stated that the APSFL headquarters building would be the second-largest laboratory in India and would house facilities for DNA profiling, toxicology, narcotic analysis, and a dedicated area for cyber forensics.
“Andhra Pradesh is the second State in the country with 7.5% of the pendency of cases in the FSL laboratories. The DNA profiling period has been reduced from 13 days to one week, with 97% accuracy in DNA detection and a turnaround time of 12 hours for critical cases,” the DGP said.
On tackling cybercrime, Mr. Harish Gupta announced that cyber forensic tools would be given to all seven Forensic Laboratories in the State while the ‘Cyber War Room’ functions at the APSFL headquarters.
On Godavari Pushkarams-2027, he said, “AI tools would be used to manage and monitor the crowd, in addition to deploying drones and installing CC cameras. The Central Command and Control Room is being set up in Rajamahendravaram city for the Pushkarams.”
Later, Mr. Harish Gupta, accompanied by APSFL Director P.H.D. Ramakrishna, inaugurated the Regional FSL in Rajamahendravaram city. The laboratory was built at a cost of ₹11 crore. “At least 70 personnel will be recruited for the Rajamahendravaram FSL within a month. The cases registered in the districts of Kakinada, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, and Polavaram will be sent to this FSL,” he said.
East Godavari SP D. Narasimha Kishore, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema SP Rahul Meena, West Godavari SP Adnan Nayeem Asmi were present.
