Apple area manager Vivek Tiwari murder case: UP cop gets 10 years in jail

A Lucknow court on Monday sentenced Uttar Pradesh Police constable Prashant Chaudhary to 10 years in prison for the culpable homicide not amounting to the murder of Apple area manager Vivek Tiwari, who was shot dead during a late-night patrol in September 2018.

The district judge's court had on September 17 found Chaudhary guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the case. He has already spent nearly eight years in jail since his arrest.

The court's sentencing comes days after it acquitted another accused constable, Sandeep Kumar, in the case.

Tiwari was shot dead on September 28, 2018, in Gomti Nagar Extension, Lucknow. According to the FIR, Tiwari was returning with his female colleague Sana Khan when he encountered Chaudhary and Kumar, who were on night patrol.

The two constables stopped Tiwari's vehicle, following which Chaudhary fired at him. Tiwari was fatally injured in the shooting.

The incident had triggered widespread outrage and allegations against the Lucknow Police, including claims that the shooting followed an attempt to extort money. An SIT headed by then IG Range Sujeet Pandey investigated the case.

Chaudhary and Kumar were arrested following the incident and sent to jail.

During the trial, eight witnesses, including eyewitness Sana Khan, the doctor who conducted Tiwari's post-mortem and police personnel who were among the first to reach the spot after the incident, gave evidence before the court.

Final arguments in the case concluded on August 6. On September 17, the court convicted Chaudhary of culpable homicide not amounting to murder while acquitting Kumar.

The court on Monday sentenced Chaudhary to 10 years' imprisonment, bringing the long-running trial in the 2018 killing of the Apple executive to a close at the trial court level.- EndsPublished By: Nitish SinghPublished On: Sep 22, 2026 02:03 IST
