A suspected artillery shell was recovered from a fishing net off the Puthiyappa harbour here on Wednesday (September 9), leading to an inspection by the police and bomb detection and disposal squad.

The object was found by a group of fishers who had put out to sea from the harbour. Unable to identify the object and unaware of the possible danger, they brought it ashore and kept it in a shed used for storing fishing accessories.

Subsequently, the bomb squad and the Elathur Coastal police reached the harbour and examined the object. It was later moved to the Armed Reserve camp for safety reasons. Coastal police officers said the Coast Guard and the Navy had been informed, and that they would examine the object to determine its nature and origin.
