Asian Games: Alex Eala assured of at least bronze, Carlo Paalam advances to gold medal match - GMA Network

Tennis star Alex Eala and Olympic medalist Carlo Paalam bannered the Philippines’ campaign in the 2026 Asian Games on Wednesday as their wins assured them of medals in the continental multi-sport event.

Eala took down Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland, 7-5, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals of the tennis women’s singles event, assuring the Philippines of another medal as she secured at least a bronze medal.

In women’s doubles, however, she and her partner Shaira Rivera fell to China’s Jiang Xinyu and Yang Zhaoxuan, while the other pair of Stefi Aludo and Tenny Madis also lost to Chinese Taipei’s Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-Hsien, ending the country’s campaign in the event.

Paalam, meanwhile, won via split decision against Makhmud Sabyrkhan of Kazakhstan to advance to the gold medal match of boxing men’s 55kg event.

The Philippines’ medal haul, however, remained at 18 with three golds, three silvers, and 12 bronzes.

Earlier, the women’s beach volleyball pair of Khylem Progella and Sofiah Pagara advanced to the semifinals after defeating Japan’s Non Matsumoto and Ren Matsumoto, 24-22, 22-20.

Bernadeth Pons and Sisi Rondina, meanwhile, fell short against Taravadee Naraphornrapat and Worapeerachayakorn Kongphopsarutawadee, 21-17, 12-21, 15-13, in the quarterfinals.

In other sports, the Sibol Mobile Legends: Bang Bang team fell to Indonesia in the quarterfinals, while golf’s Bianca Pagdanganan hit six birdies to place join 3rd at the end of the first round of Asian Games golf.
