Asian Games boxing medallists to get direct entry into 2027 World Championships

Indian boxers who win medals at the 2026 Asian Games will earn a direct route to next year’s World Boxing Championships, which will serve as the first qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced the selection framework on Wednesday.

The federation has drawn up a detailed qualification plan aimed at ensuring India sends the largest possible contingent to the LA Games. The system consists of four stages and has been designed in line with the qualification pathway formulated by World Boxing and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 2027 World Boxing Championships will open the qualification process, with the Asian Qualifier in China and two further World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028 completing the pathway. The latter events are scheduled to take place in Italy and Hungary.

"Asian Games 2026 medallists will be selected as the main entry in their respective weight categories. The gold medallists of the 10th Elite National Championships shall serve as the reserve entry in that weight category," said the circular issued by BFI this week.

Under the BFI's selection criteria, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be the primary entrant in weight divisions where India does not secure an Asian Games medal. The same rule will apply to Olympic weight categories that are not contested at the Asian Games.

There is also a provision for boxers who reach the quota bout stage at the World Championships but fall short of securing an Olympic quota. They will be granted direct access to the Asian Qualifiers.

Any remaining places will be decided through ranking-based selection trials involving members of the national camp. Boxers will first have to earn entry into the camp through the specified qualification routes before becoming eligible for the trials.

The same selection mechanism will subsequently be used to determine India's entries for the two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028.

"This policy has been framed to give our boxers a clear and structured route to Los Angeles 2028, built around consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and at World Boxing's qualification events," said BFI President Ajay Singh.

The national coaching camp will initially include medal winners from the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games medallists and wild-card selections made by the BFI selection committee in accordance with the policy.

For weight classes that are not part of the Olympic programme, the national champion will be India's primary entry for the 2027 World Championships, while the silver medallist will be kept as the reserve option.- EndsPublished By: alan johnPublished On: Sep 16, 2026 18:45 IST
