Kayla Sanchez broke her own national record for the second time on the same day, setting a new Philippine mark in the women’s 50m backstroke final at the 2026 Asian Games on Monday in Japan.

Sanchez clocked 28.19 seconds but missed out on a medal with Chinese bets Letian Wan and Xueer Wang taking home the gold and silver medals, respectively, while South Korea's Seungwon Kim bagged the bronze.
Still, it was a memorable performance for the 25-year-old Filipina swimmer as she shattered her own national record she set earlier in Heat 3, where she posted 28.24 seconds to advance to the finals.
Her previous mark was 28.47 seconds, which she set during the 2025 SEA Games last December.
