Attock bridge reopens as PTI defers protest

Following the postponement of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) long march from September 27 to October 4, the Attock Bridge and motorway have temporarily reopened for four days, restoring traffic flow and allowing vehicles to move. However, goods transport remains suspended in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad due to extensive road closures imposed over fears of the long march and sit-ins. The complete closure of hotels, motels, inns, marriage halls, private hostels and public transport in the twin cities has also resulted in thousands of daily-wage workers, including helpers, dishwashers, waiters, sweepers and sanitary workers, losing their jobs. Transport and goods terminals are completely empty, while hotels, marquees, marriage halls and hostels have been locked. Faizabad, which has been a business hub of Rawalpindi for the past 50 years, has become completely deserted and presents the scene of a silent city. Tents and canopies have been installed at the entrances of hotels and marquees. The Central Anjuman Tajiran, Transport Federation and goods transporters have demanded that the government and opposition immediately end the tense situation and hold negotiations.
