Big Mac could cost about R130 in South Africa by 2030 - IOL

South Africans could be paying around R130 for a Big Mac by 2030, more than double today’s price, if prices keep climbing at the pace of recent years.

The 40-year-old Big Mac Index demonstrates the relative value of currencies in a practical way that everyone can understand.

Traditionally, South Africa’s ranking in the Big Mac Index, which compares the South African price of the burger with its price in other countries, has suggested that the rand should be stronger than it is. The devaluation has been broadly ascribed by economists to commodity-linked volatility, political risk and structural deficits in the South African economy.

According to the latest Big Mac Index from The Economist, published in July 2026, a Big Mac costs R56.90 in South Africa. That is up from R31 in 2020 and R18.45 in 2010, so the burger now costs about three times what it did 16 years ago.

The National’s own calculations show that the Big Mac price has increased by 45.5% since 2020, while cumulative inflation has increased by 36.16% over the same period.

South Africans still pay less than most of the world for a Big Mac, though. At R56.90, a local Big Mac works out at about $3.49, making South Africa the 10th-cheapest of the 54 places in the July index.

Data from PlayCasino.com looked at every South African Big Mac price recorded in the index since it started tracking the country in 2000, when a Big Mac cost R9.

For three years, the price barely moved. It was R31 in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Then it climbed quickly: R33.50 in 2021, R39.90 in 2022 and R49.90 in 2023. The R10 rise between 2022 and 2023 was the biggest one-year jump in rand terms since South Africa was first included in the index.

The price reached R51.90 in 2024, R53.90 in 2025 and R56.90 this year. Between 2020 and 2024, the price went from R31 to R51.90, an average rise of about 16.9% a year. If a Big Mac continued to rise by that much each year from its 2024 price, it would cost around R130 by 2030.

In the US, the same burger costs $6.22, while in Britain it costs £5.49, or about $7.40.

In South Africa, the burger has gone from an easy lunch at R31 to costing closer to R60 in six years.

“A Big Mac is one of those treats you notice when the price goes up. If it keeps rising the way it did in those years, you could be looking at R130 for one burger by 2030. Nobody can say exactly where prices will go, but it’s a good reminder that the small treats add up in the monthly budget,” a statement said.
