BJP legislator strikes a different note in anti-UCC Mizoram

One of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) two MLAs in Mizoram has struck a different note in a State opposed to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

In February 2023, the 40-member Mizoram Assembly adopted a resolution opposing any move to implement the UCC in the State. Recently, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the UCC was a threat to indigenous customary laws, and minority rights.

However, BJP legislator K. Hrahmo called for a thorough examination of the UCC, arguing that its implementation could offer greater legal protection to Mizo women married to non-tribal men. He represents the Palak Assembly constituency in southern Mizoram’s Siaha district.

Speaking at a party programme at the BJP’s office in Aizawl, the State’s capital, on Monday (September 21, 2026), Mr. Hrahmo said the implementation of the UCC in Mizoram should be seen in the context of marriages between Mizos and non-Mizos.

He said some non-tribal men living in Mizoram have more than one wife. He alleged that in some cases, such men with wives elsewhere marry Mizo women to run businesses and later abandon them and their children if the businesses fail.

“The UCC provides for monogamy and contains provisions relating to the division of property following divorce,” he said, arguing that such provisions could ensure additional safeguards for Mizo women married to non-Mizos.

Mr. Hrahmo further said that opposition to laws introduced by the Centre often arises from political considerations or a lack of understanding of their provisions. He said tribal populations have been excluded from the ambit of the UCC, and such exemptions exist in States where it has been implemented.

“The Congress party portrayed the UCC as dangerous for political gains, creating apprehension among people in Mizoram without analysing its provisions,” he said.

K. Beichhua, the other BJP legislator in Mizoram, is also from Siaha district.
