Central Delhi has turned into a fortress, as the city prepares to host the BRICS Summit 2026 today (September 12, 2026), with 15,000 police personnel and 200 companies of paramilitary forces deployed to secure the dignitaries attending the summit and their movement through the city.
Late into the night on Friday (September 11, 2026), world leaders continued to fly into the city. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held key bilateral meetings with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, as well as Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.
All eyes will be on Mr. Modi’s meeting with the UAE Crown Prince on Saturday (September 12, 2026) morning, before the joint session. Diplomatic insiders say the decision by the UAE President to send his son, not a minister, is an indication of the importance of the Summit being hosted by India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (September 11, 2026) met with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian ahead of the BRICS Summit and called for resolving the ongoing conflict with the United States “through dialogue and diplomacy”. Speaking at a public event later in the evening, President Pezeshkian said his talks with Mr. Modi will help Iran’s energy and commercial ties with India and referred to Israel and the U.S. as “bullies” and said, “Iran will not be bullied.”
As New Delhi prepared to host the BRICS Summit of 11 emerging economies, negotiators were working late into the evening on Friday (September 11, 2026) to forge a consensus for the “Delhi Declaration”.
Diplomatic sources and officials said that all member countries had agreed to “almost all the text, with the exception of one paragraph”, indicating that the references to the war in Iran started by the U.S. and Israel, and Iran’s attacks on installations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other West Asian countries, had still not been resolved.
