Brydon Carse Derby assault case probe dropped by police, to face regulator probe
England fast bowler Brydon Carse will face no further police action after an investigation into an alleged assault in Derby last month was closed. The development removes one layer of uncertainty around the 31-year-old, although he remains subject to a separate investigation by the Cricket Regulator.
Footage of Carse in handcuffs and surrounded by police officers emerged on social media after an incident in the early hours of August 23. Carse had been arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was later de-arrested after officers took his details.
Derbyshire Police subsequently confirmed that it was investigating an allegation of assault in Derby city centre. In a statement released on Friday, the force said: "An investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre has been closed."
The police added: "Officers attended Molly Malones in The Wardwick, Derby, in the early hours of Sunday, 23 August. A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was then de-arrested after his details were taken by officers."
While the police investigation has now ended, Carse's situation is not completely resolved. The Cricket Regulator will continue to look into the incident, with the regulator yet to comment on the latest development. The England and Wales Cricket Board and Carse have also been approached for comment.
The incident had already cost Carse his place in England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan. Test captain Joe Root said he was "hacked off" by the situation and revealed that he had addressed the England dressing room over the latest off-field controversy.
Carse was subsequently left out of England's squad for the third Test against Pakistan and the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, despite being available for selection. The ECB said he needed to "work through the issues" surrounding the Derby incident and take time for "a proper reset".
England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum also said earlier this week that Carse needed to "get his house in order" before returning to international cricket.ENGLAND'S SRI LANKA SERIES UNDERWAY
England are already in action in a white-ball series against Sri Lanka, with the Three Lions having taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. The third T20I is scheduled for September 19 in Manchester, before the teams switch to a three-match ODI series from September 22.
Carse was not selected for the Sri Lanka series, meaning his immediate return to international cricket remains uncertain.
