Civil society groups are calling for continued engagement with Kempton Park police to find common solutions to safety concerns raised by residents.

Civil society groups are calling for continued engagement with Kempton Park police to find common solutions to safety concerns raised by residents.

The call comes as the station faces intense scrutiny following the murders of nine women in Ekurhuleni since July.

Civil society groups and political parties on Friday picketed outside the police station, demanding answers, accountability and stronger policing in the area.

The groups have given police a week to respond to a list of demands, including calls for adequate resources to ensure officers can effectively police the area.

The Deputy Minister for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Steve Letsike, said police and civil society must be properly resourced to fight gender-based violence (GBV).

She said that the scourge of GBV also requires broader social interventions.
