Capt (retd) Sohail Chaudhry named Islamabad IGP; Ali Nasir Rizvi handed NCCIA charge

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has reshuffled the senior police leadership, transferring Islamabad Inspector General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi and appointing Captain (retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry as the new capital police chief.

According to notifications issued by the Establishment Division, Rizvi has been appointed director general of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).

Sohail Chaudhry, a Grade 20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, has been appointed inspector general of Islamabad Police. He was previously serving under the Punjab government.

In another key appointment, Grade 21 Police Service of Pakistan officer Khurram Ali has been appointed director general of the National Police Bureau (NPB).

The three appointments form part of a reshuffle in the federal police and law-enforcement structure, bringing changes to the leadership of Islamabad Police, the NCCIA and the National Police Bureau.

Rizvi had been serving as Islamabad police chief since April 2024, overseeing policing, security and law-and-order operations in the federal capital.

During his tenure, Islamabad Police dealt with a range of security and public-order challenges, while also expanding its use of technology and command-and-control systems. 

In recent months, Rizvi chaired meetings focused on security, traffic management and operational preparedness in the capital.

His new assignment places him at the helm of the NCCIA, Pakistan's specialised agency for investigating cybercrime. 

The agency handles cybercrime investigations, including online fraud, harassment, data-related offences and digital forensic investigations.

The move comes as cybercrime and digital investigations have become an increasingly important part of Pakistan's law-enforcement framework.

Chaudhry has extensive experience in field policing and has held several senior positions across Punjab Police during his career. 

His assignments have included key operational, traffic and counter-terrorism roles, giving him experience in managing policing operations at both city and regional levels.

Chaudhry has served as Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, City Police Officer (CPO) Faisalabad, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Lahore, DIG Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab and Regional Police Officer (RPO) Multan.

Before he was appointed Islamabad's inspector general, Chaudhry was serving under the Punjab government. 

His new assignment now places him at the head of the police force responsible for law enforcement in the federal capital.

Meanwhile, Khurram Ali, a Grade 21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, has been appointed director general of the National Police Bureau.

The NPB serves as a federal police policy, coordination and professional development body, working on matters concerning policing and law enforcement at the national level.

The Establishment Division issued separate notifications for the appointments and transfers.
