The Johannesburg High Court cited the large volume of medical evidence and the unavailability of witnesses among the delaying factors.
The court is also faced with a tight court calendar, with Friday marking the last day of proceedings for the third term.
Matlala and his co-accused are facing a litany of serious charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder.
