Central Luzon logs 435 leptospirosis cases
SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — As a majority of areas in Central Luzon are still submerged in floodwaters, health authorities have recorded 435 cases of leptospirosis in the region since last month.
The Department of Health (DOH)-Central Luzon reported that most of the patients were exposed to floodwaters in the past several weeks.
Leptospirosis is an infectious bacterial disease transmitted to humans through contact with urine, feces or blood of infected animals like rats, or by drinking and eating contaminated water and food.
Other waterborne diseases being monitored by the DOH in the region include cholera, acute bloody diarrhea, rotavirus and typhoid.
The DOH has detected 23 acute bloody diarrhea, 34 rotavirus and 29 typhoid cases. No cholera case has been reported so far.
For the mosquito-borne dengue, the regional health office recorded 18,748 cases from Jan. 4 to Aug. 22.
