Rain is drenching wide areas from northern to western Japan. Central Tokyo has seen 34 consecutive days of rainfall, marking the longest streak on record.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says that rain is falling in areas from Hokkaido to the Kyushu region due to a stationary autumn rain front.

Wet weather continues mainly along eastern Japan's Pacific coast. In central Tokyo, rain fell for the 34th straight day on Tuesday, exceeding the previous record set in 2019.

The rainfall in the past month has been about three times the average amount in some parts of southern Kanto and other areas.

Hours of sunlight have also been shorter than usual. Weather officials are calling on farmers to take special care with crops.

As of 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Severe Tropical Storm Surigae was moving northeast over waters south of Japan at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

It has a central atmospheric pressure of 990 hectopascals.The maximum wind speed is 108 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts of up to 144 kilometers per hour.

The storm is gradually weakening, but it could come close to the Izu Islands on Thursday.

Waves are expected to rise with swells from Wednesday onward in the Izu Islands. Very strong winds and rough seas are expected on Wednesday night in the southern Izu Islands.

Rain will also likely continue through Thursday in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, which were devastated by record-breaking rainfall.

In these areas, hillsides and mountain slopes may be unstable, and some levees have been damaged. Even small amounts of rain could raise the risk of disasters.

People are advised to stay on high alert for high waves, strong winds and landslides. Officials are calling on people to check the latest weather information.
