China responds to Anthropic CEO's remarks on AI | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

China has hit back at the top executive of US artificial intelligence startup Anthropic over his remarks about the potential danger posed by China's possible lead in AI development.

In an online post on Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned of the need to slow the pace of AI development. He also warned that left unchecked, it could "outrun our ability to understand and control these systems."

Amodei added that a "Chinese lead in AI would pose grave danger for the United States and the world."

China's foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a news conference on Monday that "AI is a consequential technology for the wellbeing of all humanity." He said, "All parties should jointly promote the open and inclusive development of AI for good and for all."

The spokesperson added, "Fear-mongering, confrontation and vicious competition will only hamper efforts toward sound global AI governance, which serves no one's interest."

AI is expected to be on the agenda for summit talks between the US and China scheduled for later this month.
