Convoy of former Tripura Chief Minister attacked, opposition blames BJP

CPI(M) and Congress condemned the alleged attack on the convoy of former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar at Bamutia assembly constituency in west Tripura on Sunday (September 27, 2026). Bricks and eggs were thrown at the vehicle of Mr. Sarkar and security escorts.

Both the opposition parties described the incident as a “fallout of the BJP’s frustration” as the saffron party is fast losing its support base in the State. They also linked the incident with recent controversies concerning the Election Commission of India.

The CPI(M) politburo member did not receive any injury, but the car in which he was traveling was slightly damaged. The crowd, which created a ruckus, was protesting against Manik Sarkar’s arrival in the area to attend a meeting in the party’s local office at Bamutia.

Manik Sarkar in his reaction said that the BJP is now completely disconnected with the people and desperate to silence the voices of dissent. The saffron party’s aggressive posture is visible across the country, he alleged.

CPI(M) state secretary and LoP Jitendra Chowdhury said they were surprised to see some hooligans throwing bricks and eggs despite the presence of numerous security personnel in the area. “I have spoken to the in-charge DGP, who assured me of action, but I am doubtful about what would be police action,” he stated.

Congress leader and former Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman condemned the incident. He said the arm-twisting tactics of the BJP would not work to prevent opposition parties from garnering public support.

CPI(M) staged a protest march in Agartala in the evening to protest the attack on the convoy of Manik Sarkar, who held the office of the Chief Minister for four terms. A few hundred supporters of all the party’s wings attended the protest rally.

Meanwhile, Congress alleged suspected miscreants torched the house of party supporter Samiran Das at Kumarghat in Unakoti district Sunday. Police said the incident was under investigation.
