DA draws on own experience of fielding controversial candidate in PR lists court challenge - EWN

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is drawing from its own experience of fielding a controversial candidate to retain a seat in the City of Cape Town in its Electoral Court challenge against political parties that have not provided lists of their proportional representative (PR) candidates for the November polls.

The party is arguing that voters cannot assess a political party if they do not know who their candidates are.

ActionSA, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and Good are among the parties that have only submitted the name of one candidate on their PR lists.

The DA is arguing these parties are circumventing the law and being deceitful towards voters.

In papers filed with the Electoral Court, the DA’s federal council chairperson, Ashor Sarupen, said the party is feeling the heat by including Abdulkader Elyas at number four on its PR list for Cape Town because voters have been scrutinising who they will be voting for.
