Delhi man stabbed to death after 'Papa' joke sparks friends' quarrel

An 18-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death in west Delhi after a quarrel among friends escalated over a joke about calling one of them "Papa", police said on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Sumit Giri, a resident of Naraina Village. Police said all those involved in the incident were from the same area and knew each other.

According to police, the incident took place at around 9.30 pm on Saturday when Aman and Narsingh, who are friends, were returning to Naraina Village on a motorcycle from Payal Cinema. On the way, they met their acquaintances, Sumit and another Aman, who is the son of Anil Singh.

During the interaction, Aman, son of Anil Singh, jokingly asked Narsingh to call him "Papa". Police said Aman then allegedly threatened Aman, son of Anil Singh, with a knife over the remark, and Sumit joined the quarrel and confronted him. A mutual friend, Sargam, later reached the spot, tried to intervene and was injured.

Police said Aman allegedly stabbed Sumit during the fight and then called his younger brother to the spot. His younger brother allegedly assaulted Sumit, who was already injured. Aman, son of Anil Singh, informed Sumit's family about the incident. Sumit's father and Aman, son of Anil Singh, took him to DDU Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
