Eagles fan-favorite Zach Ertz returns to Philly amid injury concerns on offense

Zach Ertz is officially back in Midnight Green. The Philadelphia Eagles signed the 35-year-old veteran tight end to their practice squad Monday, according to multiple reports, bringing the Super Bowl LII hero home after starting tight end Dallas Goedert suffered a sprained MCL in Sunday's 24-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman needed immediate help.

Goedert is expected to miss several weeks, and the depth chart behind him was looking like a ghost town.

With backup tight ends Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra both parked on injured reserve, developmental tight end E.J. Jenkins and practice squad veteran Joshua Deguara were the only healthy targets left for quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Before packing his bags in 2021, Ertz spent nine seasons acting as an automatic third-down conversion machine in Philadelphia. He sits second in franchise history with 579 catches. He needs just 11 more receptions to pass Hall of Fame receiver Harold Carmichael’s record of 589 and become the Eagles' all-time leader in catches.

Ertz spent the 2024 and 2025 seasons with the division-rival Washington Commanders. He posted 50 receptions for 504 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games last season before a late knee injury ended his year.

Stashing Ertz on the practice squad gives him time to handle conditioning before an expected elevation to the 53-man active roster.
