TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bob Mackie, the Emmy- and Tony-winning fashion and costume designer known for his glamorous creations for Cher, Carol Burnett and other stars, died on September 14 at the age of 87. According to his representative, he died at 10:40 a.m. in Palm Springs, California.

As reported by PEOPLE, Mackie died of pneumonia. His death was announced in a statement shared on his Instagram account, which described his lifelong dream of becoming a fashion and costume designer.

Born Robert Gordon Mackie in 1939 in Monterey Park, California, Mackie began his Hollywood career after studying art. As Vogue reported, he worked in Paramount Studios’ costume department before becoming an assistant to designer Ray Aghayan, who later became his longtime creative and personal partner.

Mackie rose to prominence in television, becoming the costume designer for “The Carol Burnett Show,” which premiered in 1967. Burnett later recalled that Mackie designed as many as 50 costumes a week for the show.

His career included collaborations with some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Tina Turner, Donna Summer and Dolly Parton. His partnership with Cher became particularly iconic, spanning television shows, concerts and other performances.

Known for sequins, feathers, crystals and daring silhouettes, Mackie earned nine competitive Emmy Awards and Oscar nominations for “Funny Lady” (1976) and “Pennies From Heaven” (1982). He was also inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2002.

Mackie’s influence extended to later generations of performers, with stars including Miley Cyrus, Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift and Zendaya wearing his designs. He is survived by his granddaughter, Alyssa Townsend; his two great-granddaughters, Kyla and Keira; and his former wife, Lulu Porter.
