Fact Check: These videos DON'T show ongoing student protests in France
All three videos are old and unrelated to the current student protests across France.
Students across France have been protesting over overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and poor school conditions. Classes were disrupted on October 2 as hundreds of schools across France were closed after protests turned violent.
Several videos of arson allegedly from the France protests are now going viral. In this story, we will debunk three such videos.advertisement❮❯ Read Full Story2022 PROTEST OVER KILLING OF KURDISH MAN The first video contains two clips. Reverse-searching frames from the first one led us to French journalist Remy Buisine’s X account, where he had shared the video on December 24, 2022. He stated in the post that vehicles were overturned and set on fire during a clash in Paris.
We found the second clip shared by a Turkish X account on the same date. The post stated it was from Paris.
According to a Reuters report, clashes had broken out in Paris between police and Kurdish protestors after the killing of three members of their community by a gunman. The gunman carried out the killings at a Kurdish cultural centre and nearby cafe in Paris' 10th district.2023 STORMING OF PARIS STOCK EXCHANGE Reverse-searching frames from this video led us to another French journalist Luc Auffret’s X account. He shared this video on April 20, 2023, and said protesters stormed the Paris Stock Exchange at La Defense. This confirms that the video is old and not from the ongoing student protests in France.
The Wall Street Journal reported on April 20, 2023, that protesters had stormed stock market operator Euronext's building in Paris over President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms.2023 FIRE ON SCHOOL BUS
We found this video of a fire on a school bus in a report published by French news outlet TF1 on January 14, 2023. According to it, a school bus carrying students caught fire in Nimes in southern France. The driver, after noticing smoke, evacuated all the children. There were no casualties. The bus, engulfed in flames, moved about 20 metres before crashing into a wall.
Thus, we concluded that none of these videos shows the current student protests in France.- Ends
