Fever's Kelsey Mitchell breaks A'ja Wilson's WNBA single-season points record - USA Today
Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell continued her stellar 2026 WNBA season on Friday, Sept. 18 by claiming another record that was previously held by the league's perennial MVP.
During a 103-85 road win against the Toronto Tempo, Mitchell broke the WNBA single-season scoring record (1,021 points in 38 games) set by Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson in 2024.
The record-breaking point came with 7:57 remaining in the third quarter as Mitchell effortlessly connected on a 24-foot 3-point jumper assisted by teammate Caitlin Clark.
Mitchell finished with 33 points on 70.6 percent shooting from the field with seven made 3-pointers.
She didn't realize what she'd accomplished until she stopped for a postgame broadcast interview.
"I think you just told me, to be honest," Mitchell said when asked about how she learned she'd set a new record. "Y'all know how I get down. I just want to be able to show up and respond when my number is called and just be a good teammate, be a good person and just show love to the game like I'm supposed to."
Mitchell reached 1,001 points in 40 games, becoming the second player in WNBA history to reach the milestone. Wilson was the first player to reach 1,000 points in a season and remains the fastest to do so.
Additionally, Mitchell broke Wilson's record for consecutive 20-point games earlier this year. The Fever guard averaged 28.9 points over 11 games in August, which led the WNBA by nearly four points per game and marked the highest scoring average over at least eight games in league history.
Wilson currently has 991 points through 38 games with three contests left in the season. The Aces star leads the league with a scoring average of 26.1 points per game. It's possible she could still surpass Mitchell and set a new record for points in a season.
Mitchell now has 33 games with at least 20 points and needs just two more such performances to break Wilson's single-season record for scoring 20 points or more in a game (34). Wilson also set that record in 2024 and could still tie it this season. Wilson was the league MVP in 2024 and last season. She is the only player in league history to win four MVP awards and seems to be set for a fifth and third in a row.
Mitchell, who was drafted No. 2 overall by the Fever out of Ohio State in 2015, is the league's second-leading scorer at 25 points per game.
Mitchell also set the new Fever record for most three-pointers made in a single season in franchise history on Friday, making her 123rd career triple with five minutes until halftime.
That shot was also assisted by Clark, who recorded 28 points and 14 assists in the game. Clark previously held the team's single-season 3-point record with 122 made threes in her rookie season in 2024.
As fifth-seeded Indiana enters the postseason, the organization is campaigning for Mitchell and Clark as co-MVPs this season.
Friday's win extended their WNBA single-season record as the highest scoring backcourt duo in league history, with 20 games scoring at least 20 points each.
