Former THAI stewardess remanded by Australian court on heroin charge - Bangkok Post

(Photo: Australian Border Force) A former Thai Airways International (THAI) stewardess appeared in an Australian court on Monday morning on a charge of heroin smuggling and was remanded in custody. 

According to the news.com.au website, Meena Kondo, 26, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Her lawyer asked magistrate Kieran Gilligan for an adjournment, saying they needed time for "commenced resolution discussions".

The magistrate reportedly commented that the move was encouraging. He further remanded her in custody, to reappear again in court on Oct 12.

Ms Meena has been in police custody since she was arrested while arriving on duty at Melbourne airport on June 25. A total of 1.8 kilogrammes of heroin was found hidden in the lining of 12 tote bags she was reportedly hired to carry from Thailand to Australia.

She faces a drug-smuggling charge that could see her sentenced to up to 25 years imprisonment in Australia.

In Thailand, investigators have arrested suspects who allegedly formed a drug-trafficking network, hiring innocent people including flight attendants to carry goods that contained concealed drugs to other countries.

The heroin seized from Ms Meena's luggage in June had an estimated street value equivalent to 11.5 million baht, according to Australian authorities.
