A video of four young men allegedly beating a 20-year-old with a beer bottle near a pond, recorded by one of them, led to their arrest in Andhra Pradesh’s SPSR Nellore district on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), a week after the attack. The Venkatachala Satram police acted a day after the victim, who had kept silent out of fear but later lodged a complaint when his family saw the video on social media.
Speaking to The Hindu, Circle Inspector Kothamalli Arun said, “Though the incident took place a week ago, no complaint was made till Monday.” The victim was identified as Bellamkonda Ankaiah, 20, a resident of Idimepalle village in Venkatachalam mandal of the district.
Following a previous dispute, Ankaiah was allegedly beaten by Seshu, Anvesh, Ravi and Sampath with a beer bottle near a pond at Palukurivaripalem village at 5.30 p.m. on September 28, the Circle Inspector said.
Sampath had earlier assaulted Ankaiah’s nephew-in-law during Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations. Bearing a grudge against him, the accused allegedly assaulted Ankaiah, causing a bleeding nose injury, and attempted to stab him with a broken beer bottle and strangle him.
Ravi recorded the assault on his mobile phone. Ankaiah managed to escape but remained silent out of fear. When his family saw the viral video, he disclosed the incident and lodged a complaint at the police station on Monday morning.
The police have since begun an investigation and arrested the accused. A case was registered under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 115(2) (physical hurt), and 351(3) read with 3(5) (aggravated criminal intimidation committed by a group) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
