Four killed as Limpopo roads fill with homebound ZCC members - IOL

Four people were killed in a head-on collision on the R101 outside Mokopane on Sunday.

Four people have died in a head-on collision involving two vehicles on the R101 outside Mokopane, Limpopo.

The two vehicles collided head-on before a third vehicle became involved in the pile-up. 

The identities and genders of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

The crash occurred on Sunday, September 27, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed.

Tshifhiwa Dali, spokesperson for Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, said the MEC, Nakedi Kekana, had learnt of the crash with shock.

“On behalf of myself and the Limpopo Provincial Government, I wish to send my deepest condolences to the families of those who departed and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Kekana said.

The department will send a team of specialists to investigate the cause of the crash, Tshifhiwa said.

The accident occurred as authorities at the Nyl Plaza tollgate temporarily opened the gates to allow Southbound vehicles to pass, easing congestion caused by high traffic volumes.

More than 1,000 vehicles were passing through the Nyl Plaza tollgate outside Modimolle, while members of the Saint Engenas ZCC who had gathered at Moria began making their way home.

The latest crash comes after a fatal collision on the N1 freeway outside Polokwane last month, in which a motorist was killed and 12 South African Police Service members were injured.

The crash happened near Astron Filling Station and involved a sedan travelling northbound and a SAPS minibus, according to Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Mashudu Mabata.

Mabata said the sedan allegedly veered out of its lane before colliding with the SAPS minibus, which subsequently caught fire.

The sedan driver died in the crash.

The injured SAPS members were taken to various medical facilities across the province for treatment.
