Gaza conflict: George Galloway and Yvonne Ridley rally support in Cape Town - EWN

British political commentator George Galloway and journalist Yvonne Ridley used a Cape Town briefing on Wednesday to call for stronger international action on the war in Gaza, and greater scrutiny of mainstream media coverage of the conflict.   

Galloway is a former British MP and leader of the Workers Party of Britain, known for his anti-imperialist views, support for South Africa’s liberation struggle, and his podcast, Mother of All Talk Shows.   

Ridley is a British journalist, author and politician who gained international attention after being held by the Taliban in 2001, and has since become a prominent advocate on issues related to Palestine.   

Speaking during a breakfast engagement in Bo-Kaap, Galloway praised South Africa for instituting legal proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), but urged citizens to do more.   

"If you're boycotting, boycott harder. If you're marching, march further. If you are giving to the suffering people in Palestine, give more," Galloway said.   

Meanwhile, Ridley urged the media not to shy away from reporting about Palestine.   

"Be united, get the support of your union and try and lift up the standards," she said.   

As part of their "People Power Tour” of South Africa, Ridley and Galloway are set to be the main speakers at a mass march for Palestine in Sea Point this weekend.
