Godavari begins to recede at Dowleswaram, inflow falls to 7.79 lakh cusecs; relief continues in Chintoor

There was relief on Tuesday (September 29, 2026) for the islands of the Godavari in the delta and the tribal pockets along the banks of the Sabari and the Godavari in Polavaram district, when the inflow into the river began to fall. Relief operations are still under way, and boats are carrying essential commodities to tribal people affected by the floods in the Chintoor agency in Polavaram district. As many as 55 motor boats are deployed for the operations by the Chintoor Integrated Tribal Development Agency, where 17 habitations have been submerged.

The inflow at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram in East Godavari district fell from 9.60 lakh cusecs to 7.79 lakh cusecs in the past 24 hours, according to the Godavari flood report. The first flood warning is issued at an inflow of 10 lakh cusecs at Dowleswaram. On Monday morning the barrage had taken in 9.66 lakh cusecs, a few thousand short of that mark, and Water Resources Department officials had since worked the Polavaram project’s gates to keep the flow below it. At least 2,500 cusecs of floodwater is being released into the canals, and the rest into the Bay of Bengal.

The inflow was still falling on Tuesday, the flood report showed. Downstream of Dowleswaram, fishermen have stopped going into the river. They have been told to wait until the flood recedes completely. In the Akhanda Godavari, which lies between the Papikonda hill range and Rajamahendravaram, traditional fishermen have been told to stop fishing.

The Water Resources Department is monitoring the flood.
