Government, private medical colleges to adopt health centres across Karnataka

To strengthen specialist healthcare services at the grassroots level, the State government has asked public and private medical colleges in Karnataka to adopt taluk hospitals, community health centres, and primary health centres.

The Health and Medical Education departments have issued a joint circular to this effect as part of the Chief Minister’s 100-day programme.

Under the initiative, every government and private medical college will adopt one taluk hospital, one community health centre and one primary health centre and provide specialist medical services, training, quality improvement and other healthcare support, according to the circular.

The health centres to be adopted will be identified district-wise. The heads of medical colleges and district health officers will enter into agreements to provide the services.

The initiative is expected to improve the availability of specialist doctors at the taluk and community health centre levels, reducing the need for patients to travel to district hospitals or medical colleges for treatment.

The departments said the arrangement would help strengthen treatment for chronic diseases as well as surgical services at the secondary-care level.

The medical colleges will provide the specialist services and other support required by the adopted facilities, with the aim of improving the quality and availability of care closer to where people live.
