The Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat season, over the Philippines has officially ended, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced Monday.

The Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat season, over the Philippines has officially ended, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced Monday.

PAGASA said it has observed a gradual shift in the prevailing weather pattern in the country, signaling the end of the Habagat season.

“A gradual shift in the prevailing weather pattern has been observed over the past several days, such as the strengthening high-pressure system over East Asia, the southward-migrating Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and the notable weakening of winds and a decrease in rainfall associated with the Southwest Monsoon,” the state weather bureau said.

PAGASA added that these conditions are expected to persist in the coming days.

Consequently, the end of the Habagat season marks the termination of the rainy season over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.

The Habagat, which brings rain mainly to the western parts of the country, began on May 30 this year.

PAGASA advised the public and all concerned agencies to monitor weather information as it continues to track the country’s weather and climatic conditions.

PAGASA previously explained that the end of the Habagat season will usher in a transition period leading to the start of the Northeast Monsoon, or Amihan, which is forecast to begin by the end of October. –NB, GMA News
