A Louisiana boy who survived a stabbing attack that left four others dead made an emotional return home with a police escort as local authorities dubbed him a “superhero.”
The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office shared a video on Facebook Tuesday of the boy returning to his home in Houma, about an hour’s drive southwest of New Orleans, from the hospital after being seriously injured in the attack.
The boy, wearing a neck brace and a Spider-Man baseball cap, was seen shaking the hands of cops and saying “thank you” for helping him to safety.
“This young man and his family have endured unimaginable loss,” Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet said in a statement. “Today, we stand beside them as he comes home, and we will continue to stand beside them in the days ahead. To this young survivor: you are not alone. Your community is with you, we are with you!”
Members of the sheriff’s office and Houma Police Department had turned on their flashing lights and sirens to escort the boy, calling it “a welcome home for a ‘superhero.’”
Deputies rushed to Ashland Drive in Houma on September 12 to find the boy with stab wounds. He was airlifted to an “out-of-area” hospital in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said at the time.
As police investigated, they found four others dead inside nearby homes from a series of stabbings. A 47-year-old Houma resident, Kaegan Jude Solet, was later arrested in connection with the stabbings and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
A neighbor named Dulce recalled the moment the boy ran to her house to get inside and find help as the man accused of stabbing him trailed close behind.
“She saw that the boy went running to the back door,” Dulce’s niece, who translated her aunt’s words into English, told WWL Louisiana.
The man who had followed the boy “had wrapped the kid by his shoulders and pushed him down, then hit him again,” Dulce’s niece said, adding that the boy eventually passed out.
Dulce and her family, who were eating dinner with her when the boy rushed over, called the police.
Solet was identified as a person of interest the same day that the stabbings took place. The next day, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that he was taken into custody.
On September 15, the sheriff’s office said Solet was released from medical care, sent to a local jail and booked on the murder charges.
When sharing the video of the boy returning home from the hospital after his horrific ordeal, the sheriff’s office said, “We ask the community to continue lifting up the victim and his family while respecting their privacy as he recovers.”
One Facebook user said, “Someone take him to Disney.”
“Choked up and crying like a baby. Bless his heart,” another wrote.
A third commented, “What an amazing police force we have, with all the hell that that sweet baby has been through our police officers escort him home and made him feel special.”
