The Home Affairs Department is urging South Africans to collect their smart ID cards, even after the electoral commission’s voter registration weekend.

The department said that nearly 6,000 new smart ID card applications were processed at the weekend, while about 3,700 cards were collected.

Spokesperson Thulani Mavuso said that only 115 temporary ID certificates were issued, suggesting that most citizens already have valid identification documents.

"The volumes of green ID books are very low, so the ones that I think citizens are collecting the most are the smart ID cards, so we encourage people to continue to come to our offices to collect.
