In 2026, scrolling addiction affects most adults and nearly all children—and it’s a habit that’s notoriously difficult to break.

I’ve personally struggled with this, and the app I found hardest to close was X.

The worst part was that I wasn't even posting much, if at all. Instead, I spent hours consuming long, heated argument threads on topics that caught my interest.

Ultimately, endless scrolling never delivers a true sense of fulfilment. That lack of satisfaction is precisely what keeps you hooked, constantly searching for more.

This dynamic applies to almost any app you use compulsively. While it may feel enjoyable in brief moments, you are always left with the lingering urge to consume just one more post.

These days, I rarely log into X, using it almost strictly for work. I can honestly say my life is significantly better without it.

I broke the cycle by deleting X from my iPhone and limiting my access solely to my laptop. Removing the app from my immediate reach ensured it wasn't constantly tempting me—especially during times meant for rest and relaxation.

Deleting an app is just one approach, but there are several other proven strategies you can use to kick a screen addiction for good.

If you aren't ready to delete an app entirely, start by removing it from your home screen. Hiding the icon prevents the app from staring at you every time you unlock your device, creating a deliberate extra step before you open it.

Next, keep your phone away from your bed at night and in the morning. For most people, checking a screen right before sleep and immediately upon waking is a core part of an unhealthy routine. If you currently rely on your phone for an alarm, try switching to a standalone alarm clock instead.

You should also leverage the built-in Digital Wellbeing and Screen Time tools on iOS and Android devices. Setting daily app limits helps regulate your screen time and provides a firm boundary before usage becomes unhealthy.

Finally, one of the most effective solutions is simply filling your time with non-screen activities. Immersing yourself in reading, active hobbies, or real-world interactions naturally reduces the urge to pick up your phone.

Ultimately, breaking any addiction requires you to first acknowledge that a problem exists. Until you are genuinely ready to make a change, cutting down on screen time will remain an uphill battle—but taking these small, deliberate steps will make all the difference.
