Idaho stuns No. 1 Montana State in another controversial college football finish - USA Today
Montana State was 4-0. Idaho was 0-4.
Naturally, the Vandals knocked off the FCS No. 1 Bobcats to end their 19-game win streak.
Crazy things happen in the Kibbie Dome.
Down, 34-27, Idaho drove 80 yards in 49 seconds, culminating with QB Joshua Wood's 25-yard strike to Ryan Jezioro in the end zone on the game's final play.
Instead of kicking the extra point and forcing overtime, Idaho coach Thomas Ford Jr. went for 2 and the win.
Wood powered his way into the end zone on a QB sneak for the 35-34 win and the upset.
The game wasn't without some clock drama. Kind of a trend this season...
Prior to the touchdown, Wood completed a pass down to the Montana State 25-yard line with what seemed like zeros on the game clock, but officials said there was one second left after the first down and they added a second so the officials could move the chains.
As Idaho hurried to the line for one last snap, Montana State coach Brent Vigen called timeout. Why?
"It's one of those situations where you call a timeout or you don't call a timeout," Vigen said. "Ultimately, they made the play. I hope there was a second left."
Former NFL official Terry McAulay says the refs got it wrong Friday night.
"... it seems the officials reset the clock to :01. They are not supposed to do so," McAulay posted on X.
"Replay rules only allow the clock to be reset when the clock starts on the ready for play and there are 3 or more seconds remaining and the offense has no timeouts. The reason is that the rules makers believe it is impossible for them to snap the ball from :02 or :01 before the clock hits :00 if the ready for play is correctly given and the clock starts accordingly.
"Onfield officials are instructed not to reset here and let it go to replay. Replay would have allowed the game to end at that point."
