Ikoyi Club 1938 celebrates 88th anniversary - Punch Newspapers

Ikoyi Club 1938 on Monday officially opened its week-long 88th anniversary celebrations with a Media Connect event at the Rotunda of the club in Lagos, where it unveiled the official logo for the milestone under the theme, “Legacy in Motion”. The event drew celebrities and media personalities, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Ireti Doyle, Sola Sobowale, Kunle Afolayan, Kate Henshaw, Elizabeth Benson, Ekpeyong Bassey, Muyiwa Ademola and many more. Officials present included the Chairman, Akinwunmi Akintola; Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Anniversary Committee, Bolaji Martins; Golf Captain, Afolabi Balogun; and General Manager, Chief Executive Officer, Dr Babajide Orungbeja, among others. Akintola, who has been a member of the club for over six decades, said the celebration was as much about the future as the past. “For 88 years, generations of members have built, nurtured and preserved this club. They have given us traditions, friendship, values and an institution of which we can all be proud. But a legacy is not something that belongs only to the past. It is something we inherit, protect and continue to develop for those who come after us,” he said. He described the logo as “a visual representation of our theme, our heritage and our continuing journey”.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google The chairman also paid tribute to the media and creative industries for their role in projecting Nigeria abroad. “Through your talent, creativity and hard work, you have helped put Nigeria on the global stage. You have shown that there is much about Nigeria that the world can celebrate. That is a legacy worth recognising, and a legacy that is very much in motion,” Akintola said. He added that the programme would celebrate the diversity and fellowship that make the club special, from a Ladies’ Night to events recognising the contributions of the club’s staff. “As we move forward, we will continue to preserve the traditions that define the club while embracing new ideas, technologies and initiatives that will keep it vibrant and relevant for future generations,” he said. Martins, on his part, said it was an honour to host so many figures from the entertainment industry. “It is the honour of a lifetime for me to have this room packed with people who have elevated the entertainment industry in Nigeria. If you are checking the contribution of entertainment to our gross domestic product, it is a great honour to us. On behalf of my chairman, our trustees, our office bearers, general committee members and the entire club membership, we are so blessed. We are honoured to have such assets and treasures, people who have brought laughter to us. Thank you so much,” he said. The club has eight sporting sections, including golf, lawn tennis, swimming, squash, badminton and table tennis. The anniversary week, which runs from September 28 to October 4, on Monday evening had a colloquium titled, “The Ikoyi Club Story”, delivered by Uncle Bamtefa at the Rotunda. Tuesday features a staff engagement session, Banking and Finance Day, and an art exhibition and auction, while Wednesday is dedicated to an Elders’ Party and Digital Night. Thursday will see a book reading, a children’s party, a junior members’ party and Ladies’ Night, which is themed around table tennis. Friday’s programme includes a Real Estate Expo and a Millennial Vibes night, while Saturday features a health walk, Global Cultural Day, Foods of the World and a Diversity Night with Caribbean, Indian and European culture themes. The celebrations will end on Sunday, October 4, with the Anniversary Gala on the Main Lawn. Veteran musician, Ebenezer Obey, is also billed to perform at one of the events. The entertainers were also given awards in recognition of their contribution to the media and entertainment industry.
