The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has blamed a lack of capacity for why it cannot attend to every crime scene where it’s needed.

IPID recently released its annual report covering the 2025 / 2026 financial year.

The report shows IPID investigators only attend 77% of crime scenes and 80% of post-mortems.

IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said ideally, both those figures should be sitting at 100%.

“Remember, IPID is very limited and thin on the ground. In some areas, for example, in the Northern Cape, you will find our base is in Kimberly but you have a scene in Dr or Springbok and it’s a [long] driving distance, at times we may not be able [to be at] the crime scene immediately and once we get to the scene, we have to reconstruct the crime scene so our investigations can happen.”
