Israel fans allegedly targeted Black Irish football player Adam Idah with racist chants during Sunday's UEFA Nations League match in Hungary.
Footage online purports to show Idah being subjected to monkey noises from the crowd. Clips have been shared widely by multiple accounts, with one video now viewed 1.3 million times. UEFA has said it cannot investigate the allegation because proper protocol was not followed, The Irish Times reported.
The game was already controversial as Ireland had faced mounting pressure to boycott the fixture in political opposition to the war in Gaza.
Ireland has frequently criticized Israelβs war in Gaza and formally recognized the state of Palestine in 2024, while Israel has accused the Irish government of "extreme anti-Israel policies."
