Jigawa fed varsity gets NUC approval for AI, 29 other new programmes

The National Universities Commission has approved 30 new programmes for the Federal University Dutse, including Artificial Intelligence, Law, Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science and Community Health. This was contained in a statement signed and made available to journalists on Tuesday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, by the Acting Director, Public Affairs, Federal University Dutse, Abdullahi Yahaya. Yahaya said the approval was contained in a letter dated September 11, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15, signed by the Director, Academic Planning, NUC, Abubakar M. Girei. He said the letter was addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ahmad Gumel. According to him, the commission approved the Faculty of Law to commence academic activities and granted full-time mode for the 30 programmes beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google He listed some of the approved undergraduate programmes to include “B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems and L.L.B. Common and Islamic Law.” Other approved programmes, he said, are “B. Sc. Ed. Physics, Biology, Mathematics, B.Ed. Educational Management, Early Childhood and Adult Education.” Yahaya added that health-related programmes approved include “B. Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology and Remote Sensing and B.A. Ed. Arabic and English.” He stated that the university also secured approval for “Science Laboratory Technology with options in Biology and Biochemistry Technology.” He said postgraduate programmes approved include “PGD, M.Sc. and PhD in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance and Information Technology.” He added that “Masters in Banking and Finance and Masters in Accounting and Finance” were also approved. In his remarks, Gumel said the development marks an important step forward in his initiative to mount new academic programmes. Gumel said, “The new programmes are specifically designed to address the evolving educational needs of society as the courses focus on critical areas such as technology, science education and health-related disciplines.” He said, “This strategic academic growth aims to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with current industry demands and societal challenges, ensuring that FUD graduates are well-prepared for the workforce.” Salisu Kabuga
