Resident Doctors Association (RDA) at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad held a protest on Thursday (September 17) after a junior resident was verbally abused and threatened with physical violence by attendants of a patient.

According to the RDA, the incident occurred on Wednesday (September 16) afternoon when a junior resident in the Department of Emergency Medicine K. Srikanth, was on duty in the triage and ICU area on the first floor of the hospital. Dr Srikanth attended to a patient in Bed No. 50 at around 2.26 p.m. and, following a neurology consultation, advised a CT scan of the head and also recommended Foley catheterisation.

As the doctor was attending to another emergency case, he told the patient’s relatives that they would have to wait for a few minutes for the catheterisation. At around 4.30 p.m., he asked the technician on duty to arrange the equipment for the procedure after which the patient’s relatives behaved rudely towards Dr. Srikanth and other members of the duty team and used abusive language. They also questioned the doctors’ salaries and allegedly pressured the doctor to perform the procedure immediately despite other emergency cases requiring attention. The situation escalated when the relatives allegedly threatened the doctor with physical violence, the RDA said.

Security personnel and the duty resident medical officer reached the spot, following which the individuals left the hospital premises. Dr. Srikanth later submitted a written complaint to the RMO.

The RDA during the protest sought stronger security arrangements for resident doctors working in emergency, triage and other duty areas.
